CLASSROOM

cartello AULA

The CLASSROOM is the main workspace where you build your model, equipped with thirty-four workstations.

After the first appointment with our tutors and when you are ready to work on your model, if you need it, you can ask the laboratory staff to assign a workstation. The workstations are assigned by agreeing for each model a time of realization and giving priority to students graduating from the first session in the program. If, at the time of the request, the seats are all occupied, you will be added to the waiting list. During the assignment period you can leave the model, materials and your equipment.

You will have to completely free your workstation at the end of the period agreed with the staff and remember not to occupy the unassigned workstations, because they are freed every day from all the processed and abandoned materials, to allow as many students as possible to use the space.

To ensure that all students ready to work on the construction of the model have a seat, it is not possible to book.

Bring all commonly used tools such as cutter, stripes and squares, glue and materials needed to make your model

For the safe use of the cutter read the tutorial.

Remember not to leave used blades on the table, but immediately throw them in the appropriate containers to avoid accidental injuries.

Before using the cutter on the countertop, make sure the table is covered with at least 2 mm thick cardboard or use a cutting mat.

If you need special equipment such as: electric drill for small holes, guillotine cutter for strips, compass cutter, metal brackets or clamps, you can request them from the staff. You are responsible for the equipment you requested, so return it as soon as you have finished using it, do not hand it over to other students without permission from a member of staff and do not leave it unattended. Use laboratory equipment with maximum care and promptly report any malfunctions or breakages to the staff.

For the bonding of bases or parts of the model, we put at your disposal the “weights“: bricks and tiles, which must be used and transported with extreme caution, because they constitute a risk of crushing in case of fall. We recommend that you put weights that are no longer used back in their place at the end of the day and never leave them lying around overhanging on tables.

For safe use of weights read the following instructions.

The CLASSROOM is equipped with multiple sockets with a power switch. We ask you to turn them off at the end of the day and not to plug in any more power strips or extension cords. Always leave the corridors free of charging cables, backpacks and materials, which constitute a tripping hazard.

Do not connect personal equipment to the laboratory power supply without prior and explicit authorisation from the staff, with the exception of laptops and mobile phones.

Do not bring any highly flammable materials such as solvents and paints into the laboratory without prior and explicit authorisation from the staff.

Do not take any equipment or tools belonging to LaborA outside the laboratory premises, without prior and explicit authorisation from the staff.

You cannot use spray glues and spray paints in the CLASSROOM, but only in the spray booth in the basement

If you have to carry out wet work: putty, plaster or cement, cover the workstation with a plastic sheet.

There are two hand wash basins in the CLASSROOM, which you must not use to wash brushes and containers used for glue, paint, plaster, putty and cement. These cleaning activities must be carried out in the tubs in the PAINTING Lab in the basement.

It is forbidden to consume food and drink in all laboratory spaces: these are workspaces where solvent-based materials are used, which can be harmful, and you could accidentally damage your model or that of others.

Out of respect for all users, please remember that smoking (including electronic cigarettes) is prohibited inside the laboratory.

In order to ensure proper waste disposal, we ask you to be careful when sorting waste into the appropriate containers: paper, plastic, empty glue containers and undifferentiated waste.

Remember not to leave your personal belongings unattended: laptops, mobile phones and other valuables, as the CLASSROOM is not supervised for this purpose. Politecnico di Milano accepts no responsibility for any theft or damage.

The workshop does not sell materials, but can give you directions on where to find them. In addition, it puts recycled materials at your disposal: you can find paper, cardboard, acetate, methacrylate sheets, profiles and veneers in the chest of drawers near the entrance, scraps of expanded plastics in a box inside the DRILLING lab. If you need a few pieces of solid wood, ask the staff. In addition, ‘gluing paper‘ is available for you in the CLASSROOM: rolls of drawing boards that are used to protect the tabletop during glue application and to protect the surface of the bases during pressing. Take what you may need and leave what can be reused by other students.

Vouchers can be purchased from Poliprint for the construction of the honeycomb base and to buy materials for 3D printing.

In the event of an accident, even a minor injury or illness, you must immediately inform the staff who will provide First Aid if possible and contact the 112 Single European Emergency Number. You must not attempt to intervene alone or leave the facility. In the event that, after an accident that has happened to you in the laboratory, and after informing the technical staff, you should refuse 112 assistance, but later need to go to an emergency room or require medical treatment resulting from the accident in question, you must promptly inform the laboratory staff and provide the documentation issued by the hospital within 48 hours. This will enable Politecnico di Milano to make the report to INAIL and activate insurance cover.
